What to bring to a duplex design meeting

A clear brief describes the people who will use the two homes and the questions the design team should investigate first.

32MSD, a dual occupancy in Denistone West designed by ARCADO, with a red-framed entry

Describe two households

Explain who expects to live in each home, how much privacy the households need, and whether one home needs step-free access or space for a future change in use. Bring separate priorities for each dwelling where they differ.

Bring the site information you have

Start with the address. A survey, previous approvals, existing plans and photographs can help the team identify what is known and what needs investigation. Mark the features you value and the access or level changes that concern you.

Separate the first questions from design decisions

At the first meeting, ask what needs to be established before choosing a layout or approval pathway. Agree on a written scope for that investigation and on the consultant advice required before committing to the next design stage.
